Bone Density Testing

Who needs bone density testing? If you are over age 65 If you are over age 50 with one risk factor
    Family history (one degree relative with osteoporosis)
    History of low trauma fracture
    > 45 years old

    less than 127 pounds
    Smoker
    Chronic drug ingestion
    Dilantin Steroids Thyroid replacement
    On prolong therapy (estrogen or other bone anti-resorptive treatment).


    Your doctor will need the following information to determine if you need this test:
All Medications, dosage and duration of use.
Have you ever taken hormones or bone building medications?
If so, when and for how long?
Have you ever taken steroids (Prednisone) or thyroid hormone?

If so, when and for how long?

Since the age of 35 have you fractured any bones?

Are you pregnant?

Do you smoke?

Do you consume caffinated beverages?
Do you consume alcoholic beverages?
Have you ever had a hysterectomy?
Have you gone through menopause?
Have you ever had back or hip surgery?
Do you exercise regularly?
Have you had any barium x-ray studies done within the last 10 days?

Have you had any nuclear scans done within the last 10 days?

Have you had any relatives diagnosed with osteoporosis?

Do you have any relatives with stooped or rounded back or shoulders?

Have you lost any height since you were younger?
Do you have osteoarthritis?
Do you have rheumatoid arthritis?

Do you have any other bone or joint diseases?
